Original vs Vertuo: which pods fit your machine?
Original machines (Essenza Mini, CitiZ, Lattissima and others) use a high-pressure pump and small capsules for ristretto, espresso and lungo. Other brands, such as Peet’s and L’OR, make Original-compatible capsules. Vertuo machines read a barcode on each pod that sets the cup size and brewing parameters, then spin the capsule to brew (Nespresso). What are the best Nespresso Original pods?
Ispirazione Firenze Arpeggio (best all-rounder)
Short, dark-roasted Arabicas give Arpeggio a creamy body and bold cocoa notes (Nespresso). Intensity 9. It keeps its flavor when you add milk, which makes it our pick for lattes and cappuccinos. A decaf version is also sold.
Ispirazione Ristretto Italiano
A medium-dark roast built for a short, intense ristretto (0.85 oz), rated intensity 10 (Nespresso). It’s strong and bold, so not for everyone, but it stands up well to milk. Expect dark chocolate, a bright edge of acidity and dark berry notes. There’s a Decaffeinato version too.
Ispirazione Palermo Kazaar (strongest)
One of the strongest Nespresso capsules, rated intensity 12. It’s mainly Robusta with a touch of Arabica, long and dark roasted for a bitter, spicy, velvety cup (Nespresso). If you don’t like very strong coffee, choose Arpeggio instead.
Vienna Linizio Lungo (best mild lungo)
Not everyone wants intense coffee. This lightly roasted lungo (3.7 oz) is rated intensity 6 and has malty, cereal-like notes with low bitterness (Nespresso). It goes well with dessert.
Peet’s Espresso Capsules (best third-party pick)
Peet’s sells a sampler of four dark blends in Original-compatible capsules: Nerissimo, Ristretto, Crema Scura and Ricchezza, ranging from intensity 8 to 11 (Peet’s). They work in Original machines such as the Essenza Mini, CitiZ and Lattissima, not in Vertuo machines.
L’OR Espresso Capsules
L’OR makes strong, Original-compatible capsules such as Ristretto, Onyx and Profondo Lungo, plus flavored options (L’OR range). When we checked, single flavors were in stock but the variety samplers were not, so you may need to build your own mix.
Volluto Decaffeinato (best decaf)
If you want an evening espresso, Volluto Decaffeinato is a sweet, smooth blend of Brazilian and Colombian coffees, rated intensity 4 (Nespresso). Arpeggio and Ristretto Italiano also come in decaf.
Master Origins Ethiopia
A light, floral coffee made from dry-processed Arabica, rated intensity 4, that suits breakfast or dessert. In the US, the Original version is now sold as part of Nespresso’s Single Origin 50-capsule pack rather than on its own. Vertuo owners can buy Ethiopia for Vertuo.
What are the best Nespresso Vertuo pods?
Melozio, Odacio and Stormio (best for a mug of coffee)
These three 7.77 oz Vertuo coffees are a good way to find your strength. Melozio (intensity 6) is smooth with a honeyed sweetness, Odacio (7) is bolder and fruity, and Stormio (8) is dark, woody and spicy (Nespresso). They’re made for drinking black or with a splash of milk rather than for lattes. Melozio also comes in decaf.
Altissio (best Vertuo espresso)
A 1.35 oz Vertuo espresso of South American Arabica and Brazilian Robusta with a velvety crema, rated intensity 9 (Nespresso). The regular pod is caffeinated; for decaf, buy Altissio Decaffeinato.
Starbucks Pike Place Roast by Nespresso
If you miss the Starbucks house coffee, this Vertuo pod brews a smooth medium roast with cocoa and praline notes, rated intensity 7 (Nespresso). It only works in Vertuo machines.
Are Nespresso pods worth it?
Pods are pre-measured and sealed, so you get a consistent cup with no grinding, dosing or tamping, and you only open one serving at a time. The trade-offs are cost per cup and less control than a real espresso machine. Nespresso capsules are aluminum, and in the US you can order a free recycling bag and drop it off at a collection point (Nespresso recycling).
